Mr Mike Whitfield
Head of DT
During the past 30 years, I have taught apprentices, school children, international exchange students and helped the less practical with degrees and doctorates. Today, I find myself as Head of DT at Rupert House, and hope to develop younger children’s practical skills, giving them confidence with tools and various materials. But above all, I aim to open their eyes to design, and how it is a part of our everyday lives. How lucky am I?!
I have been involved in education in one form or another for over 30 years. I originally qualified in farm management and was persuaded to go back to college to study agricultural engineering by my wife. I have always had a passion for machines and on completing my course was asked to join the college as a member of staff, working in agricultural engineering, construction plant, 3D design and furniture.
I worked for myself when my children were at primary school and with a number of my former students, developing their businesses and helping local farmers and growers. I love working with my hands, both indoors and out, and have a passion for model making. In the winter months, I shoot with my naughty gun dog Barley. I still keep two old tractors to remind me of my younger years.
My children are both at university and I came back to education 5 years ago at Shiplake College, supporting other staff and teaching engineering. My ever patient wife, spends most of her working week away with the NHS.
