Year 3 immerse themselves in Roman history

Yesterday, the Year 3 children embarked on an exciting journey back in time to experience life as ancient Romans. The day was packed with hands-on activities that brought Roman history to life.

In the morning, they took part in crafting their own Roman helmets, diving into the art of ancient Roman metalwork. They also practised reading and writing with Roman letters and honed their skills in counting using Roman numerals, immersing themselves in the everyday tools of Roman life.

The afternoon saw the young historians heading to the forest school, where they underwent training to become part of the legendary 3rd Roman Legion. Armed with shields they had created the previous week, they learned to march in formation and practised the iconic Testudo, a defensive formation used by Roman soldiers. However, their battle against the Celts didn’t go as planned—unfortunately, the 3rd Legion was decimated, with every third soldier falling to the centurion's command!

The day wrapped up with creative workshops, where the children tried their hand at traditional Roman crafts, making intricate mosaics and designing their own Roman coins.

It was a fun day of learning and adventure, giving the children a unique opportunity to step into the shoes of a Roman soldier and explore the world of ancient Rome in an interactive way.
