Welcome to Rupert House

The Henley Youth Festival 2025 brought a wonderful array of activities and performances to Rupert House School, offering our students a unique opportunity to engage in diverse cultural and creative experiences, all based around the theme of 'Growing'.

From Flamenco dancing to Shakespearean drama, art workshops, and musical performances, it was a week full of creativity and excitement.

Year 4 Flamenco: A Taste of Spain
On 5th March, Year 4 students experienced a vibrant introduction to the art of Flamenco dancing when professional Flamenco dancer, Danielle Yglesia, visited Rupert House as part of the Henley Youth Festival programme. She introduced the children to the different varieties of Flamenco, explaining how each region of Spain has developed its own distinct style, choreography, and costume. The children were captivated by the accompanying guitar, castanets, clapping, and music, discovering the importance of improvisation in Flamenco. They worked on footwork, clapping, and posture, and there was much excitement as the children tried on flamenco dresses and accessories. By the end of the session, everyone was full of energy, leaving to the beat of the guitar and a deeper appreciation for Spanish culture.

Young Shakespeare Company performance of Hamlet for Years 5 and 6: Shakespeare Comes to Life

On the same day, Year 5 and 6 students were treated to a dynamic and interactive performance of Shakespeare's Hamlet by four talented actors from the Young Shakespeare Company. The production was fast-paced and engaging, with the students becoming active participants in the drama through a variety of language and drama activities.

The children had the chance to explore the emotions, motivations, and thoughts of the characters, stepping into the shoes of Hamlet, Ophelia, and others. Volunteers were chosen to act out scenes, and everyone enjoyed speaking and interpreting Shakespeare’s iconic words in a fun, accessible way. It was a thrilling way for students to connect with one of the greatest playwrights in history.

Year 3 Art Workshop: ‘Growing’ with Emily Cooling

On Tuesday, 11th March, Year 3 students participated in a creative art workshop led by Emily Cooling, focusing on the theme of ‘Growing.’ The children were encouraged to create unique, layered, and textured headpieces using a variety of recycled materials. Emily brought with her an impressive range of materials, which the children eagerly explored. It was a joy to watch Emily transform everyday objects, like plastic bottle caps, into beautiful flowers. The children left the workshop proudly wearing their colourful and imaginative headpieces, showcasing their creativity.

Year 1: Growing Flower Chart and Musical Fun
On Wednesday, 12th March, Year 1 students enjoyed a special visit from Michaela Clarke at Create and Make. They engaged in a fun art activity to create their own "growing flower chart," where they measured their height and marked it on a flower design. The children excitedly noted their heights for March 2025, eager to see how much they will grow in the coming months. It was a wonderful way to combine art with personal development!

"Musician!" performed for Pre-Prep by Music for Miniatures: a Classical Music Journey

Pre-prep students were treated to a visit from Music for Miniatures, where they learned about the various forms of music that exist all around us. The children had fun discussing which music group – brass or woodwind – is better, while also experiencing an array of instruments, from oboes and trumpets to a shell and even a hosepipe! The children loved hearing some of their favourite songs performed on these fascinating instruments.

A Week to Remember

The Henley Youth Festival has once again brought an inspiring range of artistic, cultural, and creative experiences to our students. From dancing and drama to art and music, the week was filled with learning, fun, and creativity. It’s an event that continues to ignite the imagination and foster a love of the arts among the young people of Henley and beyond. A huge thank you to the team at Henley Youth Festival for making this exciting week happen for the children of Henley. We look forward to next year's festival and the exciting opportunities it will bring!
