Shining a Light on Mental Health
This week, on 10th October, we celebrated World Mental Health Day across the school.
Children and staff wore green accessories to school in exchange for a £1 donation to local charity, Riverside Counselling who provide affordable counselling and psychotherapy to adults and young people from the age of 12. We raised a total of £156.50.
We kicked off the day with an assembly highlighting the importance of good mental health, emphasising the need to look after ourselves and each other, and that it’s okay to ask for help. The children also took part in mindfulness activities, encouraging them to reflect on their strengths and embrace their uniqueness.
At Rupert House, pupil and staff wellbeing is a top priority that we consistently address. Kindness to others and to oneself (which is one of the main ingredients of good mental health) is encouraged throughout school life. The children are supported in developing their own self-care strategies.
Important contributors to wellbeing such as healthy eating, connections with others and the community, learning new things, or being physically active, are constantly encouraged at Rupert House. Our excellent Learning Enhancement provision supports children of all abilities, with Quincy, our trained therapy dog, providing comfort and smiles. We have trained Mental Health First Aiders readily available for both pupils and staff, fostering a safe and supportive environment. Additionally, the form teachers and pastoral team monitor students’ feelings daily, identifying patterns and providing targeted support. Then, to ensure a smooth transition as pupils move into the next academic year, we hold thorough transition meetings to clarify expectations and pathways.
